This brings back fond memories. When I was 13 we started from scratch a football team in my town in Sardinia, at the time some TV network was airing NFL matches at night. We boys were mesmerized. We mail ordered gear from printed magazines (back then, before the internet, there were magazines for just everything) and we trained on a dirt field. There were a couple of other teams in the surrounding area and we planned matches haphazardly on the phone, mostly based upon when our parents could drive us. We never managed to have more than a few matches because of the logistics. I mostly played HB. It lasted just a couple years, mostly because my mom wasn't really happy after my brother and I suffered minor knee injuries. Wonderful times!

Yeah. I mean, did he like football? To watch it, say? If ER injuries are your primary association, that's admittedly a bad starting point. (And presumably a big thing for the moms too. A lot of them really don't personally care about football, or enjoy the family schedule being built around something that scares them, with no particularly positive associations.)
